Twin Fountains
I struggled with the idea of posting anything this month.
The thought of going on living my comfortable, middle class life while missiles and white phosphorus rain down on Palestinian children, wringing my soft, white hands over the correct order of my photographs, made me feel nauseous.
There is an uneasy truce between guilt and hope inside of me– a dissonance within myself.
I know that the tax dollars taken directly out of my paycheck are being used to destroy entire families- but I grant myself permission to find nourishment in my loved ones embraces. While the local school district refuses to pay a living wage to my child’s teachers, I allow myself to be present in the joy of meeting my friend’s child for the first time. As the people of Gaza toil in darkness and fire, I feel the sun on my face and I luxuriate in conversation with one of my oldest friends. Watching tennis balls gently bounce on a brightly painted court.
I wander clumsily through twin fountains of anguish and hope.
Don’t let the bastards get you down.
Sharing a few quick actions that have helped me feel human over the past few weeks.
5 Calls.
When I feel my anxiety rising, sometimes it really helps to call my Senators and Congress person and leave long messages on their voicemails. It takes a few minutes and actually makes me feel better. I kind of pretend like its my therapist’s voicemail box. The 5 Calls site makes it super easy to call.
